The Languages of Babylon

As the visitors’ center of the European Parliament, the Parlamentarium in Brussels enables the population of the EU member states and everyone who is interested to get to know the institutions of the EU in a dynamic, multimedia, and interactive way. The particular challenge of this exhibition, which was opened in 2011, was to untangle the babel-like linguistic confusion and make the content of the history of European integration and its institutions available in all 24 official languages of the member states. The NOUSguide has made this possible and can be enlarged – just like the EU itself.

The NOUSguide serves as a source of information for the numerous objects and installations in the exhibition. The well-engineered technology of the NOUSguide identifies visitors’ current location in the background so that the guide can automatically and conveniently receive the media installations in the appropriate language: wall projections greet visitors in their mother tongue, videos are translated simultaneously, and the challenges arising from the linguistic diversity in the daily goings-on of the parliament can be experienced at close quarters with a 360° installation.

An especially intuitive navigation system guides visually impaired visitors through the exhibition, and there are four sign languages for hearing-impaired visitors.
